2012 EMMYS
On August 19th, 1909 the first race was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, now the home of the Indianapolis 500. At that time the race was five miles long. 12,000 spectators cheered as Austrian engineer Louis Schwitzer won the race with an average speed of 57.4 miles per hour.
This track built on 328 acres of farmland was originally a testing track for the growing auto industry. Hopes were that occasional races pitting different manufactures against each other would influence spectators and send them rushing to the showrooms for a closer look at these cars. The composition of the tracks surface, tar and crushed rock, was unstable and broke up in several places causing the deaths of two drivers, two mechanics and two spectators at that first race.
YOU CAN SEE THIS HISTORICAL SPOT ON SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2012 WHEN THEY HOST THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISIONI ARTS & SCIENCES LOWER GREAT LAKES CHAPTER EMMY AWARDS CEREMONY.
